On 25th April 2023, the former Chief Minister of Punjab, Parkash Singh Badal passed away at the age of 95 due to age-related illnesses. He was a prominent leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) party and had served as the Chief Minister of Punjab five times. His death has been mourned by people across the state and the country.
Parkash Singh Badal was born on December 8, 1927, in the village of Abul Khurana, near Malout in Punjab. He started his political career as a sarpanch (village head) and later became a member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. He served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1970 to 1971, 1977 to 1980, 1997 to 2002, 2007 to 2012, and from 2012 to 2017. He was the only Chief Minister of Punjab to have served five terms.
During his tenure, Parkash Singh Badal focused on the development of agriculture, infrastructure, and industry in Punjab. He is credited with initiating several programs that transformed the state’s economy and brought about significant improvements in the standard of living of the people. Some of his major initiatives include the construction of the Kharar-Ludhiana expressway, the establishment of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), and the setting up of the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant in Bathinda.
Parkash Singh Badal was also a vocal advocate of peace and communal harmony. He strongly condemned the violence that occurred during the Sikh separatist movement in the 1980s and 1990s and played a key role in restoring peace in the state. He was a firm believer in democracy and always stood up for the rights of the people.
After his death, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying that Badal was a “stalwart” of Indian politics who devoted his life to public service. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh described Badal as a “towering” figure in the state’s politics who had left an indelible mark on Punjab’s development.
