A witness at the scene reported that several shots were fired and a man was detained by the police. Photos circulating on news agencies show a man appearing to be detained in Handlova.
The country’s president, Zuzana Čaputová, confirmed the attack shortly after the news broke. She expressed her shock at the brutal and reckless attack on the Prime Minister, condemning it in the strongest possible terms. She also conveyed her wishes for Fico’s early recovery and expressed her thoughts for his family and close ones.
