Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, March 12, 2024 — In a significant incident, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas crashed during an operational training sortie near Jaisalmer. The pilot, thankfully, ejected safely, and there have been no reported injuries on the ground. This marks the first crash of the indigenous Tejas jet since its maiden test flight 23 years ago in 2001.
The ill-fated Tejas aircraft encountered difficulties during its training mission, leading to the crash. The jet came down within the compound of a student hostel in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The pilot’s swift ejection ensured that no harm befell those on the ground.

The Tejas, developed by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), represents a significant milestone in the country’s defense capabilities. As an indigenous light combat aircraft, it has undergone rigorous testing and improvements over the years. Its induction into the IAF was a moment of pride, showcasing India’s technological prowess.
Following the crash, the IAF has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the cause. Safety protocols and maintenance procedures will be scrutinized to prevent similar incidents in the future. The pilot’s successful ejection underscores the importance of robust safety mechanisms.
The Tejas program has seen remarkable progress since its inception. From its early design stages to operational deployment, it has evolved into a formidable fighter jet. Despite this unfortunate incident, the Tejas remains a symbol of India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense production.
