Brittney Griner, a renowned basketball player, and her wife, Cherelle Griner, are embarking on a new journey of parenthood. The couple announced on Instagram that they are expecting their first child in July 2024. The post was captioned, “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” accompanied by the hashtags #BabyGrinerComingSoon and #July2024.
The Griners’ love story began at Baylor University, leading to their marriage in June 2019. Brittney Griner, who was drafted to the WNBA in 2013, has been playing for the Phoenix Mercury since then.
However, their journey has not been without challenges. Brittney Griner was detained in Russia in February 2022 after customs agents at a Moscow airport found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She was tried on drug charges and stated at the trial that she had packed them inadvertently. Consequently, she was sentenced to nine years at a Russian penal colony, which she began serving in November 2022.
In a turn of events, she was freed on December 8, 2022, after President Joe Biden negotiated her release in exchange for a Russian arms dealer. Cherelle Griner, speaking at a news conference that same day, expressed her relief, saying, “Today my family is whole. As you all are aware, there’s so many other families who are not whole.”
Brittney Griner returned to the basketball court last spring, demonstrating her resilience and determination. She is set to release a memoir about her experiences in Russia titled “Coming Home” on May 7. She shared on Instagram, “Ultimately, the book is also a story of how my family, my faith, and the support of millions who rallied for my rescue helped me endure a nightmare.”
As they prepare to welcome their first child, the Griners’ story serves as a testament to their strength, love, and resilience in the face of adversity. Their journey continues to inspire many as they embark on this new chapter of parenthood.
