Mukhtar Ansari, a notorious gangster-turned-politician, died of cardiac arrest in Uttar Pradesh, India, on Thursday. The 63-year-old, who had been a five-time lawmaker, had been incarcerated since 2005. His death has sparked controversy, with his family alleging that he was poisoned in jail.
Ansari’s criminal career began in the 1990s when he ran his own gang. He had over 60 criminal cases against him, including 15 murder charges. Despite his criminal background, Ansari transitioned into politics and won his first state election in 1996 in his home constituency of Mau. He remained a lawmaker until 2022.
In April 2023, Ansari was convicted for the murder of Krishnanand Rai, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Earlier this month, he received a life sentence for a 1990 case involving fake arms licenses.
On the day of his death, Ansari was taken to the hospital after complaining of vomiting. Despite the efforts of a team of nine doctors at Rani Durgavati Medical College, he succumbed to a cardiac arrest.
The news of Ansari’s death led to tightened security in Uttar Pradesh as crowds gathered outside his home. His brother, Afzal Ansari, an MP from the state, alleged that Mukhtar was given a poisonous substance in jail food. This claim has added to the controversy surrounding his death.
Ansari’s son, Umar Ansari, expressed his frustration at not being allowed to meet his father two days prior to his death and claimed that he learned about his father’s deteriorating health through media reports.
The circumstances of Ansari’s death remain disputed, and his post-mortem is scheduled for Friday. As the state mourns and speculates, the story of Mukhtar Ansari serves as a stark reminder of the complex interplay between crime and politics in India.
