Israel’s PM, Benjamin Netanyahu Prepares for Possible Iran Attack Amid Growing Tensions

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is reportedly meeting with top officials to prepare for a potential attack by Iran. This development comes as tensions escalate over the possibility that Tehran will retaliate for an airstrike that killed senior Iranian commanders nearly two weeks ago.

Local media reports suggest that Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to meet members of his war cabinet, including Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and opposition figure Benny Gantz. The meetings are in response to warnings from US officials that a major attack on Israel could be imminent.

One US official warned that Iran could deploy more than 100 drones, dozens of cruise missiles, and possibly ballistic missiles. These would reportedly be aimed at military targets in Israel, presenting a “challenging” defense scenario for the country.

The mounting tensions have prompted several countries, including the US, UK, India, and Australia, to warn their citizens against traveling to Israel. The US State Department has also restricted the movement of diplomatic staff and their families in Israel, confining them to the cities of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Beersheba.

In Israel, the possibility of an Iranian attack has led to increased concern and anxiety. However, the government has not issued any new advice to the population beyond existing guidance to stock up on water, food for three days, and essential medicine.

Local authorities have reportedly been instructed to prepare for the possibility of an attack, including assessing the readiness of public shelters. Last week, the Israeli military cancelled home leave for combat troops, bolstered air defenses, and called up reservists.

Thirteen people were killed in the April 1 missile strike on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus. The victims included senior Iranian military leaders, among them Brig Gen Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force in Syria and Lebanon. While Israel has not claimed responsibility for the strike, it is widely considered to have carried it out.
