San Francisco International Airport (SFO): In a dramatic incident that unfolded at San Francisco International Airport, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200 lost one of its tires during takeoff, resulting in a cascade of events that left onlookers stunned. The tire debris plummeted to the ground, causing damage to cars parked below.
Flight UA 35, bound for Osaka, Japan, departed from SFO at 10:53 local time on March 7, 2024. Shortly after takeoff, passengers and crew onboard were met with an unexpected turn of events. One of the aircraft’s six tires dislodged, leaving the plane with a critical landing gear issue.
Footage captured by Cali Planes shows the tire separating from the Boeing 777 just seconds after takeoff. The tire debris landed in an employee parking lot at the airport, narrowly missing people and structures. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but at least one car in the parking lot suffered damage due to the falling tire.

The flight crew promptly alerted air traffic control and made the decision to divert the aircraft. United Flight 35 changed course and safely landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 1:30 p.m. ET. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) closely monitored the situation and will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
“We’re grateful to our pilots and flight attendants for their professionalism in managing this situation,” United Airlines stated in a press release. Ground crews at LAX were prepared with a tug to move the aircraft upon landing, ensuring the safety of passengers and crew. United Airlines also pledged to address the needs of the owners of the damaged vehicles at SFO.
According to United Airlines, the Boeing 777-200 is designed to land safely even with missing or damaged tires. The incident highlights the robust safety protocols followed by airlines and their commitment to passenger well-being.
While the tire mishap caused a temporary disruption, the swift actions of the flight crew and ground personnel ensured that everyone onboard was safe. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a reminder of the aviation industry’s unwavering dedication to safety and preparedness.
