In a significant development, Hyundai Motor Co and its sister company, Kia Corp, have announced a recall of approximately 170,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in South Korea. The recall is due to identified problems with the software in the charging systems of these vehicles.
Hyundai is set to recall 169,332 EVs in South Korea, affecting five EV models, including the Ioniq-series and Genesis models. On the other hand, Kia will recall 56,016 EVs.
The issue lies in the software of the integrated charging control units used in these vehicles. Errors in this software could make it difficult to power a low-voltage battery, leading to the possibility that the vehicles could stop while driving.
In response to the issue, Hyundai Motor Group stated, “Hyundai Motor and Kia will take prompt actions to prevent customer inconvenience and will continue to prioritize the safety of our customers and their vehicles.” This statement underscores the companies’ commitment to customer safety and satisfaction.
The voluntary recalls are scheduled to start on March 18.
This recall highlights the challenges faced by automakers in the rapidly evolving EV market. It underscores the importance of rigorous quality control and swift action in addressing potential issues. As Hyundai and Kia navigate this recall, their actions will be closely watched by industry observers and customers alike.
